Which parts?

Will be very cool if the streaming actually works, but I've been around for a long time, so not getting my hopes up.
crankmychain on "Virtual conference attendance -- how should this work?" http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/topic/virtual-conference-attendance-how-should-this-work#post-89 Fri, 30 May 2008 10:48:34 +0000 crankmychain 89@http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/
PS here is the code if you want to embed it in your site or blog:

<embed src="http://player.stickam.com/stickamPlayer/175387712-4551511" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="820" height="490" scale="noscale" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true"></embed>
crankmychain on "Virtual conference attendance -- how should this work?" http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/topic/virtual-conference-attendance-how-should-this-work#post-88 Fri, 30 May 2008 10:42:23 +0000 crankmychain 88@http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/
CrankMyChain.TV will be doing live webcasting from the conference utilizing a service called Stickam.

Viewers will be able to watch it and also video conference from that site http://www.stickam.com/carfree . But would be sufficient if at least the key presentations use the live webcast and the rest of them has text-based reporting and discussion or multimedia and audio files available.

- I sure will.

- Watching/reading, textual online discussion... No problem, but I believe we can have a live webcast of my Workshop. That's what I'd like to discuss more. Is there any chance we can run a test to see if it works? We can also build an website here with pictures, videos, discussions and other things about our on-going project.

- I think that it's just fair to charge for virtual participation, but it should be much cheaper.
Anonymous on "Virtual conference attendance -- how should this work?" http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/topic/virtual-conference-attendance-how-should-this-work#post-77 Wed, 13 Feb 2008 15:53:22 +0000 Anonymous 77@http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/
I am a countywide bicycle and pedestrian coordinator and may have a scheduling conflict that may not allow me the time off from work to attend this conference in person during the week. To answer Elly's initial questions:

-A live webcast of the entire conference would definitely be useful to me; with the exception of participating in discussion, I can still benefit from viewing the exchange of perspectives from participants as if I attended in person. Although text-based reporting is great to have (perhaps in addition to the webcast), I would prefer that it not be the primary medium for the virtual conference.

-Yes, I can use the internet to follow the conference

-I really like the idea of having online discussion; however, it might not be successful unless aren't enough participants; depending on the number of comments received from online participants, there is the question of whether there be a volunteer/staff person to read/filter online comments for presentation to participants in Portland; perhaps consider the option to call in with questions/comments for discussion

-Given that the virtual conference is set up in a manner that is straightforward and provides participants with a 'hassle-free' way to keep up with the what has happened at the conference, I would not have a problem with paying a registration fee. The amount I'd think reasonable for virtual registration fee would depend on the setup of the virtual conference.
Elly on "Virtual conference attendance -- how should this work?" http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/topic/virtual-conference-attendance-how-should-this-work#post-76 Tue, 22 Jan 2008 14:29:12 +0000 Elly 76@http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/
Here's an example from Simon Field in the UK of a format he likes from right here in Portland:

http://www.cts.pdx.edu/seminars.htm

Note the option to stream or download an MP3, plus links to the person's or organization's web site.
Elly on "Virtual conference attendance -- how should this work?" http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/topic/virtual-conference-attendance-how-should-this-work#post-75 Tue, 22 Jan 2008 13:21:10 +0000 Elly 75@http://www.carfreeportland.org/forum/
This forum is for people who are unable to attend the conference in person, or who would prefer to attend virtually for environmental reasons.

Some questions to get you started; feel free to bring up your own thoughts:

- Would a live webcast of the entire conference be useful to you, or would you prefer mostly text-based reporting and discussion, or something in between?

- Will you be able to use the internet to follow the conference?

- How would you participate? Just by watching/reading? By online discussion?

- How much, if anything, would you be willing to pay to participate virtually in the conference?

Thanks, Elly
